Viola by Rory Boardman, Kai-Thomas Roth, Kathrin Hügel & William Castle, Westhope 2024
This instrument is based on the work of Anselmo Bellosio. It has a one-piece back of flamed maple. The front is two pieces of medium grain spruce. The varnish is red-brown in colour and the instrument is not antiqued.
This viola was made as a joint project by Rory and some friends from the British Violin Making Association; Kathrin Hügel, William Castle and Kai-Thomas Roth. They made it during a BVMA making workshop in March 2024. It was completed in 10 days, working day and night. They set it up "in the white" (without varnish) to hear it before going back to their respective workshops. It received great feedback from the other makers in the room!
The varnishing and final finish was completed in July 2024 in Donaghadee.
This viola measures 15 7/8" (40.3 cm) in length.
A very manageable size, it sounds fantastic and is very enjoyable to play.
