BOARDMAN VIOLINS

VIOLIN MAKING, RESTORATION AND REPAIR

Violin by Rory Boardman & Kathrin Hugel, Donaghadee/Strasbourg 2023

This instrument is based on the 1735 "Baron Knoop" violin by Carlo Bergonzi. It has a one-piece back of heavily flamed maple. The front is two pieces of medium grain spruce. The varnish is red-brown in colour and the instrument is not antiqued.

This violin was made as a joint project by Rory and his friend Kathrin Hugel. They met through the British Violin Making Association. She is an excellent maker and restorer based in Strasbourg. The woodwork was started in Donaghadee and finished in Strasbourg. The final finish and setup was completed in February 2024 in Donaghadee. This violin was well travelled before it was even finished!

This instrument is bright, open and resonant. It is a joy to play.
